The composition represents an episode from the expedition of the Argonauts.
According to the myth, the dragon of Colchis guarded the Golden Fleece. Jason
was able to take it with the help of Medea, who made the monster fall asleep. In
some versions of the story, Orpheus also takes part, and his music helps to calm and
put the dragon to sleep. This explains the scene clearly: Orpheus is shown as a
musician, holding his harp, while the dragon lies powerless at his feet. The
mythological episode can therefore also be understood as an allegory of the magical
and calming power of music, which is able to control even a dangerous monster.
The composition is based on a continuous, curved movement, typical of Baroque
art. Orpheus’ body forms an S-shaped line, giving the figure elegance and
movement, while his upper body and the harp create a second, more vertical axis.
The dragon, placed in the lower part of the composition, introduces a more
irregular and dynamic movement.
